iPhone 5 to Feature 4-inch Display, A5 Processor – Report

A new report from Digitimes claims that the next-generation iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch display to take on Android-powered phones head-to-head as the battle for the supremacy in the next-gen smartphones heats up. They have received this piece of info directly from the component suppliers.

The component suppliers noted that the production lines for Apple’s next generation iPhone have begun testing, and Apple is interesting in expanding the screen size to 4-inches to support the tablet PC market as the vendor only has a 9.7-inch iPad in the market.
Another report from the same source claims that iPhone 5 will sport a faster A5 processor (Dual-Core perhaps?) to take on the likes of recently announced Samsung Galaxy S II, while the iPad 2 will feature an enhanced version of the current A4 chip.
Apple is reportedly looking to outsource the production of its A4 processor as well as the next-generation ARM Cortex-A9-based A5 processor to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), according to industry sources.
According to Digitimes Research, the iPad 2 will support an enhanced version of the A4 and the A5 will power the iPhone 5. TSMC will initially produce the improved A4, and could likely become the exclusive manufacturer of the A5.

iPad 2 LCD Panel Makes Its First Appearance? [Images]

9to5Mac claims to have obtained the upcoming iPad 2 LCD Panel via iFixYouri.

With the help of the iFixYouri iPhone 4 repair shop, we have been able to acquire what we believe is an iPad 2 LCD, fresh out of China. At this point, we cannot tell if the resolution is higher (or “Retina”) but it is definitely higher quality in terms of its build. The iPad 2′s display is also lighter, and over a mm thinner than the current iPad’s display with a smaller surrounding frame. This is a dream for a product designer like Jony Ive who now has some more tapering options for what looks to be a significantly lighter iPad 2.

Take a look at some comparison photos below...

Geohot To Release Untethered Jailbreak After 2.10.11 (Verizon iPhone 4 Launch) ?

Continuing the jailbreak theme today comes news that jailbreak supremo MuscleNerd has claimed that Geohot might release a new untethered jailbreak in the coming weeks.

The news comes after another iPhone developer and hacker Pod2G informed the world that a new vulnerability has been discovered for iOS and that GreenPois0n is being actively worked on as it is clear that Apple has blocked GreenPois0n in its upcoming version of iOS – version 4.3.
Reading MuscleNerd’s comments it appears we could be getting at least one new untethered jailbreak for at least some devices sooner rather than later.
As our illustrious leader @TaimurAsad points out, the date of February 10th is no coincidence – that’s when the Verizon iPhone finally lands in stores. New owners looking for a jailbreak on day 1 could be in luck!
Of course this is still unconfirmed by Geohot himself, so fingers crossed. Hopefully he can pull himself away from all that Sony drama going on in the PlayStation jailbreak scene to help us out in iLand!

Redsn0w 0.9.7 for Windows Will Untether iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak with iOS 4.1 Firmware. Expected to Release Soon

The iPhone Dev Team has confirmed that a Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 is on its way for jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1 with iOS 4.1 IPSW instead of iOS 4.2b3 firmware and SHSH blobs.

Since Apple still serves the 4.1 IPSW (not blobs!), we’ll do a Windows redsn0w release for untethered 4.2.1 via Monte-4.1
Unfortunately though, it wont be as fast as its Mac OS X counterpart. This is because the Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 will be using filesystem instead of RAM, which will make the process a whole a lot slower.
Please don’t complain too loudly about how slow it takes :) The Win version uses filesystem instead of RAM: slow!
As always, we will keep you updated. Stay tuned for more!

Sony Granted Temporary Restraining Order Against Geohot, the King Of All Things Jailbreak

Well well well, what do we have here? Engadget reports that a US District Court has granted Sony a temporary restraining order against George Hotz, or Geohot as you may know him. Sony had previously sued everyone’s favorite hacker for jailbreaking the Japanese company’s PlayStation 3.
…the US District Court for the Northern District of California granted Sony’s request for a temporary restraining order forbidding Mr. Hotz and his merry men from distributing or linking to the jailbreak, helping or encouraging others to jailbreak, hacking into the PS3 or PSN, or distributing any information they’ve found while hacking.
PS3
Hotz has also been ordered to hand over any computers and/or media that may be used in the production of the jailbreak.

They grow up so fast!  It doesn’t seem five minutes since the iTunes App Store was launched, but it just hit the 10 BILLION download mark Apple announced via press release.  That’s one impressive number!
Apple’s online sale counter ticked over the magic number earlier today, and one lucky punter has scooped a $10,000 iTunes voucher. The lucky app-fiend is Gail Davis of Orpington, UK after she downloaded Paper Glider. Just think how many apps you could download with $10,000!
CUPERTINO, California—January 22, 2011—Apple® today announced that more than 10 billion apps have been downloaded from its revolutionary App Store℠ by the more than 160 million iPhone®, iPod touch® and iPad™ users worldwide. The 10 billionth app downloaded, Paper Glider, was purchased by Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK. As the winner of the App Store Countdown to 10 Billion Apps, Gail Davis will receive a $10,000 iTunes® Gift Card.
“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”
The revolutionary App Store offers more than 350,000 apps to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users in 90 countries around the world, with more than 60,000 native iPad apps available. Apple is reinventing the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.
As Engadget points out, 10 billion is more downloads than this planet of ours has humans. Just think about that for a minute and tell me it isn’t mind-boggling!

Google Android 2.3.2 update for Nexus S

Google is rolling out two OTA updates that will fix a certain SMS bug that has been plaguing some Android handset owners.

The Nexus S has received the Android 2.3.2 update, sized at only 600kb, which comes with some important bug fixes, including the SMS bug fix but also addressing the issues that caused the Nexus S to randomly reboot.

Nexus One owners received the Android 2.2.2 update – not quite a Gingerbread upgrade just yet – that has been said to address the same SMS bug and also contains other “important bug fixes”.

If you own a Nexus S and you haven’t yet received the update, it is possible to install it manually:

  1. You need to download the file from Google’s Android repository from HERE
  2. Rename the file to update.zip, place it on the phones internal storage
  3. Apply the patch from recovery.

NOTE: If this is something you haven’t tried before, we suggest you wait for the official update.

Apple VS. Facebook: Walled Garden

This suggestion come from security firm Sophos as a report that takes a look at threats from 2010, and offers advice on how to stay secure for the coming year. Sophos said in 2010 it analyzed 95,000 pieces of malware every day, almost double the amount the company tracked in 2009.

No sooner had Sophos published its report than Facebook fired back, arguing its security measures are already more effective than what Sophos suggests.
"We have a dedicated team that does robust review of all third-party applications, using a risk-based approach," Facebook said in a statement. "This ensures that the team is focused on addressing the biggest risks, rather than just doing a cursory review at the time that an app is first launched."
At issue are the numerous online games, quizzes, calendars and online productivity suites you can interact with on Facebook. Some of these applications have proven to exhibit malicious behavior in the past such as Farm Town, which was infected with a malicious ad last April.

Sophos said the social network's more than 500 million users are a prime target for online attacks, and that Facebook isn't doing enough to protect users.
"Any user can create an application, with a wide range of powers to interact with data stored on user pages," Sophos said, suggesting a malicious actor can create and run a scam on Facebook with relative ease. "To combat this serious problem, a 'walled garden' approach may be more suitable."

Sophos points to Apple's App Store for iOS (and now Mac) devices as an example of a so-called walled garden where every app has to be vetted for security and quality concerns.

At the very least, Sophos believes Facebook should allow users to "secure their own page," where only vetted applications would be allowed to run. It's not clear what Sophos means by "vetted applications" absent an approval process.

Facebook argues it is effectively dealing with rogue apps and that its users are safer than ever.
"As a result of our efforts ... spam, malware and other attacks [on Facebook] have decreased in their effectiveness," Facebook said.
Facebook did not have any statistics available to show by how much malicious attacks on the social network have decreased.

While an approval process may help reduce malware, the scheme wouldn't necessarily catch all threats.

In July, for example, a Vietnam-based developer was able to rack up charges on the accounts of unsuspecting iPhone users. In August, there were reports of iTunes accounts being hacked and overcharged for more than a year.

Nevertheless, despite its shortcomings, an approval process could be an effective tool for Facebook to combat online scams. This is especially true since Facebook plans on giving developers the ability to request more sensitive Facebook profile data such as your home address and mobile phone number. Facebook launched the new developer feature on Friday, but had to reverse its decision late Monday after heavy criticism. The social network plans to reintroduce the feature.

Motorola Xoom: As a Test For Life Beyond The iPad

Is the iPad a one-hit wonder or will the tablet market take off broadly in 2011? That's the question Motorola's Xoom tablet will likely answer.
And this broader market, of course, includes Hewlett-Packard's WebOS tablet and RIM's PlayBook, among others. But Motorola's Xoom stands as the biggest potential consumer rival to the iPad 2 because Motorola is a first-tier supplier that has already competed mightily against Apple in the smartphone market (think Droid) and, more importantly, packs in plenty of eagerly awaited goodies, including: Google's Android Honeycomb operating system for tablets, a powerful dual-core processor, a high-resolution (1,280x800) display, dual cameras, and lest we forget, the Verizon 3G (and soon-to-come 4G) network.

That said, tucked into a research note I received on Friday from Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, was this morsel: "The magnitude of tablet opportunity beyond Apple is unclear." And he also writes that "we believe that iPad volumes in the current quarter will dry up ahead of the iPad 2 launch."
So, will we see long lines at Verizon stores the day of launch, like the iPad? Or has the tablet novelty worn off enough that it's not a line-forming impulse-buy anymore? And/or is it principally a phenomenon linked to the cachet of Apple products?

Based on my own experience, I believe that the media tablet is more than a one-hit wonder. The sheer utility of my iPad has cut my laptop use almost in half, as I've written before. (And the iPad trumps my iPhone too, in a number of respects, like mapping.)

So, what kind of numbers do we need to see? Considering that the market is still nascent, that's a tough call. Kumar said that Apple shipped between 6 and 7 million iPads in the most recent quarter, "with the lower end (Wi-Fi) dominating the mix." With Apple as the high-water mark, we can't expect those kinds of numbers from Motorola initially.

Asia-based rumors claim Motorola is aiming to ship as many as 800,000 out of the gate and RIM a bit more. Those would be healthy numbers.
And Motorola appears to be doing all it can do to make interesting accessories, too--like this speaker dock and Bluetooth keyboard, among other add-ons.
Who knows, the tablet, in one form or another, could eventually make the laptop obsolete. That would result in huge, market-upending numbers. But I'll leave that highly-speculative analysis for next year.

Personal Hotspot to all iPhones

As expected, Apple has pushed personal hotspot feature to all iPhones on iOS 4.3 but it'll work like tethering on AT&T, likely with those fun-time data caps. No word on AT&T yet.

New Camera Effects

As noted by iSpazio, iOS 4.3 beta 1 firmware files hints at some references to new effect in the Camera app. The effects are; Thermal Camera, X-ray, Kaleidoscope, Normal, Tunnel of Light, Collapse, Turbine, and Enlarge.

New FaceTime Icon, Full Screen iAds

As reported by 9to5mac, iOS 4.3 brings a groovy, new FaceTime icon (above) as well as a new full-screen iAd banners and adds Airplay and Apple TV services (not apps on Apple TV -- yet) for apps. Specifically:
AirPlay Video support is now available as an option for developers in the MPMoviePlayerController class. It is also available to web authors via the QuickTime Plug-In or media element

Brings Back Orientation Lock

It seems like Steve Jobs changed his mind and decided to bring a new setting lets you choose for the switch to be an orientation lock or the new mute switch (via MacStories):

iPhone 3G and iPod touch Support Drop

As we reported, iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G have been discontinued as of iOS 4.3. Both of the devices are not listed anymore on the iOS developer website. This indicates that the latest iOS build for iPhone 3G and iPod touch may be iOS 4.2.1.

Apple to Remove Home Button on iPad 2 and iPhone 5

According to BGR sources, Apple is about to make a significant change on iPad 2 and iPhone 5, as Apple will drop the home button on the both devices. The source has mentioned that Apple added multitouch gestures for iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button.

We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Yes, we are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.

That’s not all, however. In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it’s possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.

Additionally, we’re told Apple’s popular photo-taking application, Photo Booth, will be appearing on the next iPad. It’s also very possible that we’ll see iLife apps for iOS unveiled around the iPad 2 release as well.

It has been said that Steve Jobs didn’t want any physical buttons on the original iPhone at first, and it looks like he may soon get his wish.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 Download Available ! Fixes Bluetooth Issues !

The iPhone Dev Team has just updated Redsn0w 0.9.7 untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak to fix bluetooth issues and any sand-box related issues will be fixed.

The Windows version is not released yet due to it's slow compared to the Mac OS X version. So the iPhone Dev Team working on speeding it and release it as soon as possible.

The update follows as:
The fifth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). Bluetooth is now working (and any sandbox-related issues should be resolved too). Please do not pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW! Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer program have legitimate access to that IPSW using these links (http://pastie.org/1403214) (the links won’t work unless you’re a legit developer currently logged in).

There is actually a Windows version of beta5, but it’s excruciatingly slow compared to the Mac version because it’s forced to use files on your hard drive instead of RAM while it’s processing the very large IPSW images. It really is very very painfully slow, so we probably won’t be releasing it for testing purposes unless it can be sped up somehow.
To use Redsn0w 0.9.7b5, use our guide posted here while removing STEP 4 since it doesn't required usbmuxd anymore.
Two days ago we have showed you a video presenting the jailbreak for PlayStation 3 (PS3), this jailbreak is a
shared success between fail0verflow team and Geohot, after that I have been asked a lot about the full step by step guide to jailbreak PS3 using Geohot method.

How To: Jailbreak PS3 on 3.55 only
STEP 1Plug a USB stick into your computer
STEP 2: Create a folder in the root of the USB stick called PS3
STEP 3: Create a folder inside the PS3 folder called UPDATE
STEP 4: Download http://geohot.com/jailbreak.zip
STEP 5: Unzip Jailbreak.zip to PS3UPDAT.PUP
STEP 6: Move PS3UPDAT.PUP to the directory UPDATE that you just created on the USB stick
STEP 7: Plug the USB stick into your PS3
STEP 8Navigate to Settings Tab
STEP 9: Choose System Update
STEP 10: Choose Update via Storage Media
STEP 11: It will say it found Version 3.55-jb
STEP 12: Choose OK
STEP 13: Accept Conditions and Install Update
STEP 14After less than a minute, your PS3 will update, beep 4 times then shut down.
STEP 15Power up your PS3 (You will have to do it on the console and not by the controller)
STEP 16: Your PS3 is now jailbroken!

How To: Install Packages
STEP 1: Plug your USB stick into your computer
STEP 2Drop http://geohot.com/test.pkg into the root of the USB stick
STEP 3: Plug your USB stick into your PS3
STEP 4Navigate to the Game Tab
STEP 5Choose Install Package Files
STEP 6: Select the test.pkg
STEP 7: After it installs you will find the test package from geohot installed below the Install Package Files folder
STEP 8: Wait for more packages to be created by the PS3 community

Note: With the above geohot's PS3 jailbreak guide, you won't be able to play backup games or pirated games or whatever you choose to call them. You can install packages with the provided installer. More packages will be coming from the PS3 jailbreak community in the coming weeks and months. [via StealthBravo]

iPhone 5 and iPad 2 to Feature a Dual-Core CPU?

An analyst at Rodman & Renshaw claims that the upcoming Apple iPad 2 will feature a dual-core CPU to compete with the likes of RIM PlayBook, and the Android “Honeycomb” based Motorola Tablet.

The analyst said:
Apple is on track to refresh the iPad by March and iPhone by late summer. A key component upgrade across these platforms will be a dual-core processor featuring a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores.
If this happens, it will be the first iOS product from the Cupertino-based company to sport a dual-core chip. And since both the current iPad and iPhone 4 shares same A4 CPU, it will be a no brainer for Apple to include the same chip in iPhone 5 that they are going to use in iPad 2

Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 is Out ! Fixes TaskSwitcher and App Crashes !

The iPhone Dev Team has just released the second beta of Redsn0w 0.9.7 to convert tethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 to untethered on new-generation iOS devices. The second beta is still for testing only so stay away if you rely on your device or care for an unlock.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 fixes all the native app crashes (including Task switcher). This is the only change from the first beta that was released earlier today. Just follow the guide posted here to achieve the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. In case you got any problems usbmuxd in beta 1, this won't help, it's better to wait for another beta.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 for Mac OS X
Download iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
Download iTunes 10.1.1 for Windows / Mac OS X

UPDATE 1: Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 now available. This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs too (like the daemons that handle media content). So now embedded videos in iTunes work. The same link above.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 For iOS 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPhone 4, iPad And iPod Touch 4G Released

As expected, iPhone Dev team has just released a new version of Redsn0w (Redsn0w 0.9.7b1) that implements the “backup plan” for iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak.
Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 can be used to (untethered) jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1. Please note that Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 is meant only for beta testers and not for the general public as there are still some known issues that need to be addressed.
Update #1: We’re about to release the first beta using this new “backup method”, which redsn0w calls “Jailbreak Monte”. Here are some important points:
This is a beta tester program. It’s not a general release! Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!
For the same reason, please don’t participate if you rely on the ultrasn0w carrier unlock. Wait for the final version!
Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.
This very first beta1 is limited to iPhone4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G.
Cydia must have your 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on file. (As we approach a general release, we’ll provide a way to let you use locally saved hashes too).
You must already have the usbmuxd software installed and running on your Mac (this requirement will eventually go away too). The correct invocation of the relay is just as that page says: “./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222”. If the relay isn’t installed or running correctly by the time the redsn0w ramdisk has started, you’ll need to restore to stock FW again to try it again. Please test it beforehand to save yourself some time!
Update #2: The second beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). This version should fix all the native app crashes (including Task switcher). That’s the only change in from beta1….Bluetooth is still disabled. If you had trouble using the usbmuxd in beta1, please wait until we incorporate that into redsn0w itself (i.e. don’t bother trying this beta2, just wait for the integration).

redsn0w 0.9.7b2 (OS X). Please test this after a fresh restore (otherwise it’s impossible to keep track of the variables involved). Select “Jailbreak Monte” to try out the untether.
Update bugs:
In addition to the known bugs, users are reporting the following problem:
- iPod app is not working for iPhone 4 and iPad users
- YouTube app is not working for some users
- Users reporting issues playing videos from the camera roll
- AirPlay is not compatible
- Users have reported that some iOS apps are crashing

Accessing Your iPhone's SIM Card

The presence of a SIM card slot is one of the things that differentiates the iPhone from your run of the mill iPod Touch. How do you access the SIM card inside, and why would you even need to replace the SIM card?
One good reason for doing so is if you plan on traveling abroad. You can receive much cheaper rates by using a SIM card originating from the country you’re visiting. Of course, there are other valid reasons and additional points that you’ll want to keep in mind as well…

If you ever want to unlock your iPhone, learning how to remove your SIM card is one of the first steps towards that goal. If you’re an iPhone 4 owner, and plan to use your phone on another carrier, chances are you’ll have to learn how to cut your SIM card as well.

Comex May Not Complete Untethered Jailbreak By Christmas

Comex has tweeted saying that he may not be able to complete his untethering of the current jailbreak by Christmas.

I think I'm going to miss my Christmas deadline...

On Tuesday the iPhone Dev-Team announced that their 'backup plan' untethered jailbreak is nearly ready and will not require a restore of your device.

Comex's untether is more extensible and should not require access to the developer only 4.2b3 IPSW; thus, it's suggested that users wait for his.

Next Version of RedSn0w to Allow Quick iPhone Untethered Jailbreak

If you decided to update to iOS 4.2.1 and jailbreak using RedSn0w, you most likely have a tethered jailbreak, which requires you to plug your iPhone in and kickstart it with RedSn0w every time you reboot. Very inconvenient.
We’ve had words for a while that the Dev Team was working on an untethered jailbreak, which MuscleNerd confirmed would be available before Christmas.
Today, the Dev Team’s frontman gave us more information about this untethered jailbreak via a tweet in reply to someone asking if we’ll have to fully restore the iPhone and run RedSn0w again in order to benefit from all the untethered goodness…
According to MuscleNerd, the process shouldn’t require a restore. You’ll most likely have to run RedSn0w on top of your current install and it should take care of it for you. That’s pretty good news. A restore can be a painful process, especially if you have lots of jailbreak apps and themes to reinstall.
We’re now days away from Christmas and it hasn’t been confirmed again whether we’ll get this untethered jailbreak before the 25th. iPhone hackers do celebrate Christmas too, so a delay in the release of the RedSnow untethered jailbreak wouldn’t be surprising.
I bet many of you are waiting for this untethered jailbreak, am I wrong?

Facebook 'Profile Picture Hack' Tutorial

As most of you know, Facebook has announced a new profile page with some changes two weeks ago and you may can't get back to your old Facebook profile page. So, you would better recreate your Facebook profile with a really-cool Facebook profile page hack that will make your day !

Oudin says that even Facebook’s simple blue and white layout can be more personalized using this cool tweak. It might not be the same over the top personalization of sites like MySpace and Bebo, Oudin’s hack showed that there are still new, innovative and creative ways to express yourself on Facebook.

Here's an example of Gerges Mourad's profile page for this cool hack:

1) Take a screenshot of your current Facebook page.

2) Create a new Photoshop doc.

3) Grab the Slice tool (same family as the Crop tool) and select around the pictures.

4) With the Marquee tool, select around the sliced areas.

5) Bring the image that you want on Facebook into Photoshop and position it roughly the way you want it.

6) Drag the image layer under the Facebook layer and refine your positioning.

7) Go to “File,” select “Save for web and devices,” select all your document area, click “Jpeg, set the quality to 100% and save. Under slices select “All user slices.”

8) Upload your pictures to Facebook and tag them from last to first. When you get to the first picture click “Make this my profile picture.”
