iPhone 5 and iPad 2 to Feature a Dual-Core CPU?

An analyst at Rodman & Renshaw claims that the upcoming Apple iPad 2 will feature a dual-core CPU to compete with the likes of RIM PlayBook, and the Android “Honeycomb” based Motorola Tablet.

The analyst said:
Apple is on track to refresh the iPad by March and iPhone by late summer. A key component upgrade across these platforms will be a dual-core processor featuring a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores.
If this happens, it will be the first iOS product from the Cupertino-based company to sport a dual-core chip. And since both the current iPad and iPhone 4 shares same A4 CPU, it will be a no brainer for Apple to include the same chip in iPhone 5 that they are going to use in iPad 2

Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 is Out ! Fixes TaskSwitcher and App Crashes !

The iPhone Dev Team has just released the second beta of Redsn0w 0.9.7 to convert tethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 to untethered on new-generation iOS devices. The second beta is still for testing only so stay away if you rely on your device or care for an unlock.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 fixes all the native app crashes (including Task switcher). This is the only change from the first beta that was released earlier today. Just follow the guide posted here to achieve the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. In case you got any problems usbmuxd in beta 1, this won't help, it's better to wait for another beta.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 for Mac OS X
Download iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
Download iTunes 10.1.1 for Windows / Mac OS X

UPDATE 1: Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 now available. This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs too (like the daemons that handle media content). So now embedded videos in iTunes work. The same link above.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 For iOS 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak For iPhone 4, iPad And iPod Touch 4G Released

As expected, iPhone Dev team has just released a new version of Redsn0w (Redsn0w 0.9.7b1) that implements the “backup plan” for iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak.
Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 can be used to (untethered) jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1. Please note that Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 is meant only for beta testers and not for the general public as there are still some known issues that need to be addressed.
Update #1: We’re about to release the first beta using this new “backup method”, which redsn0w calls “Jailbreak Monte”. Here are some important points:
This is a beta tester program. It’s not a general release! Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!
For the same reason, please don’t participate if you rely on the ultrasn0w carrier unlock. Wait for the final version!
Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.
This very first beta1 is limited to iPhone4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G.
Cydia must have your 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on file. (As we approach a general release, we’ll provide a way to let you use locally saved hashes too).
You must already have the usbmuxd software installed and running on your Mac (this requirement will eventually go away too). The correct invocation of the relay is just as that page says: “./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222”. If the relay isn’t installed or running correctly by the time the redsn0w ramdisk has started, you’ll need to restore to stock FW again to try it again. Please test it beforehand to save yourself some time!
Update #2: The second beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). This version should fix all the native app crashes (including Task switcher). That’s the only change in from beta1….Bluetooth is still disabled. If you had trouble using the usbmuxd in beta1, please wait until we incorporate that into redsn0w itself (i.e. don’t bother trying this beta2, just wait for the integration).

redsn0w 0.9.7b2 (OS X). Please test this after a fresh restore (otherwise it’s impossible to keep track of the variables involved). Select “Jailbreak Monte” to try out the untether.
Update bugs:
In addition to the known bugs, users are reporting the following problem:
- iPod app is not working for iPhone 4 and iPad users
- YouTube app is not working for some users
- Users reporting issues playing videos from the camera roll
- AirPlay is not compatible
- Users have reported that some iOS apps are crashing

Accessing Your iPhone's SIM Card

The presence of a SIM card slot is one of the things that differentiates the iPhone from your run of the mill iPod Touch. How do you access the SIM card inside, and why would you even need to replace the SIM card?
One good reason for doing so is if you plan on traveling abroad. You can receive much cheaper rates by using a SIM card originating from the country you’re visiting. Of course, there are other valid reasons and additional points that you’ll want to keep in mind as well…

If you ever want to unlock your iPhone, learning how to remove your SIM card is one of the first steps towards that goal. If you’re an iPhone 4 owner, and plan to use your phone on another carrier, chances are you’ll have to learn how to cut your SIM card as well.

Comex May Not Complete Untethered Jailbreak By Christmas

Comex has tweeted saying that he may not be able to complete his untethering of the current jailbreak by Christmas.

I think I'm going to miss my Christmas deadline...

On Tuesday the iPhone Dev-Team announced that their 'backup plan' untethered jailbreak is nearly ready and will not require a restore of your device.

Comex's untether is more extensible and should not require access to the developer only 4.2b3 IPSW; thus, it's suggested that users wait for his.

Next Version of RedSn0w to Allow Quick iPhone Untethered Jailbreak

If you decided to update to iOS 4.2.1 and jailbreak using RedSn0w, you most likely have a tethered jailbreak, which requires you to plug your iPhone in and kickstart it with RedSn0w every time you reboot. Very inconvenient.
We’ve had words for a while that the Dev Team was working on an untethered jailbreak, which MuscleNerd confirmed would be available before Christmas.
Today, the Dev Team’s frontman gave us more information about this untethered jailbreak via a tweet in reply to someone asking if we’ll have to fully restore the iPhone and run RedSn0w again in order to benefit from all the untethered goodness…
According to MuscleNerd, the process shouldn’t require a restore. You’ll most likely have to run RedSn0w on top of your current install and it should take care of it for you. That’s pretty good news. A restore can be a painful process, especially if you have lots of jailbreak apps and themes to reinstall.
We’re now days away from Christmas and it hasn’t been confirmed again whether we’ll get this untethered jailbreak before the 25th. iPhone hackers do celebrate Christmas too, so a delay in the release of the RedSnow untethered jailbreak wouldn’t be surprising.
I bet many of you are waiting for this untethered jailbreak, am I wrong?

Facebook 'Profile Picture Hack' Tutorial

As most of you know, Facebook has announced a new profile page with some changes two weeks ago and you may can't get back to your old Facebook profile page. So, you would better recreate your Facebook profile with a really-cool Facebook profile page hack that will make your day !

Oudin says that even Facebook’s simple blue and white layout can be more personalized using this cool tweak. It might not be the same over the top personalization of sites like MySpace and Bebo, Oudin’s hack showed that there are still new, innovative and creative ways to express yourself on Facebook.

Here's an example of Gerges Mourad's profile page for this cool hack:

1) Take a screenshot of your current Facebook page.

2) Create a new Photoshop doc.

3) Grab the Slice tool (same family as the Crop tool) and select around the pictures.

4) With the Marquee tool, select around the sliced areas.

5) Bring the image that you want on Facebook into Photoshop and position it roughly the way you want it.

6) Drag the image layer under the Facebook layer and refine your positioning.

7) Go to “File,” select “Save for web and devices,” select all your document area, click “Jpeg, set the quality to 100% and save. Under slices select “All user slices.”

8) Upload your pictures to Facebook and tag them from last to first. When you get to the first picture click “Make this my profile picture.”
Take a look at the video demonstration below:

Here is Why Cydia Is Called As Cydia..

Cydia is a household name amongst the jailbreak community, but what does the word really mean? and why was it called that? Those of you who have jailbroken iOS devices are very likely to have used Cydia. The credit for this store which brings extra unrestricted functionality to our iOS devices goes to Jay “saurik” Freeman, who happens to be the brains behind this concept.
Cydia is used by millions of iPhone users and may be a very well known application, but not many people know what it means. Cydia is interestingly enough, named after a moth of all things! The Cydia pomonella to be precise, is the scientific name for the “coddling moth” or what is more commonly known as the stereotypical Apple worm.

According to Wikipedia, the Cydia pomonella “has proved to be a problematic pest on several fruit trees, including apples and pears. The caterpillars burrow into the fruit, rendering it un-sellable”. The ironic name of Cydia is therefore fitting, since it has turned out to be quite the worm to Apple’s devices. With each successive iOS release, the term “jailbreak” is becoming more prevalent amongst the average user and that can only be a good thing for development of the replacement packaging and repository manager.
So now you know, the vital tool for your iOS devices jailbreak is named after a moth that is a pest for fruit trees, such as those of apples (fruit) and Apple Inc.

New Version of TinyUmbrella will Allow You to Restore Your iOS Device without iTunes

Actually, it's not a new tool, it's the well-know must have tool, TinyUmbrella. Semaphore, the developer behind TinyUmbrella, has started a new post regarding that he is working on a new and improved version of TinyUmbrella that will allow you to restore your iOS device without iTunes.

From what's being said on his blog:
I've been working on a new and improved version of TinyUmbrella that will, among other things, allow you to restore your iDevice without iTunes. With the holiday season and work, this will take me a bit to get working the way I want it. I appreciate your patience and your support. You guys are awesome :) No ETAs yet but I'll post updates here and on twitter.
With this feature in TinyUmbrella, you won't need iTunes anymore and of course, this will bypass all errors while downgrading, updating, and may help with preserving the baseband. We'll post updates as they come, stay tuned !

The Fastest Way to View Cydia Updates

Many of you like to see new packages in Cydia as soon as they’re available. If you’re put off by the time it takes Cydia to load, then here’s an alternative method to view changes, updates, and newly posted apps.
To do this, you will need an RSS reader app, or at the very least a Google Reader account. I recommend using the free version of MobileRSS, but any will do. Once you have a way to view RSS feeds on your iPhone, add the feed listed below.
For quite some time, ModMyI has been publishing Cydia crawling RSS feeds with the latest packages available in the Cydia Store. They have feeds for every category and they catalog every app available.
I created a workflow in Yahoo! Pipes that grabs all new items in Cydia while filtering out Themes, Fonts, and Ringtones.
Note that when you subscribe, you will only view packages that have been published after you add the feed to your reader.

Cydia for Mac Confirmed ! And It Is Coming “Within Weeks”

At the 360|MacDev conference, Jay Freeman (aka Saurik), who is the creator of Cydia store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has confirmed that he and his team are working to bring Cydia to computers running Mac OS X.

Since Apple’s Mac App Store will have some restrictions like no in-app purchases, the Mac Cydia maybe the perfect store for many developers who like working without going through the painful Apple’s approval process.
TUAW reports:
Currently, Cydia Installer has been used by about 10% of all iPhone users, or about 10 million devices. There are well over 30,000 packages available for iOS, and a lot of open source material can be downloaded from Cydia. He refers to Cydia as a store for things that are not apps, but extensions of what iOS devices can do.
Freeman felt that the same type of store would be useful for Mac OS X devices; the result is a Mac Cydia, which will be available "within weeks.
So yes, Mac Cydia is coming within weeks! If you are a developer and are interested in getting your apps to feature in Mac Cydia, you can contact a Cydia employee at: patrick [at] saurikit [dot] com for futher details.

Greenpois0n Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 on All iDevices on Its Way

Few minutes ago p0sixninja the hacker behind Greenpois0n jailbreak has just announced that the new version of Greenpois0n is being updated to be untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 4,3GS iPod touch 4G, 3G and iPad, but the untethered task has caused a delay in releasing the new Greenpois0n.

I apologize for the delay in greenpois0n 4.2.1 support. Our current focus is on a permanent untether solution
Till now there is no ETA (estimate to arrival) for the new Greenpois0n. By the way Comex is also developing a new method to make untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 on all devices and it's expected to see the light on Christmas.

Facebook Brings More Features to iPhone & Mobile Users

Almost over 200 million people use Facebook with a mobile device. Whether it's an iOS device or even a simple mobile device, Facebook is used so much to share photos, access apps, and connect and interact with friends. In October, Facebook has added a dashboard to the regular desktop website to see how applications are using your information.

Now, Facebook as released this same feature to the mobile devices. It will allow you to edit this information and stay updated off a mobile device now!

In the picture below, you can see the application Loopy. As you can see, this Loopy application is connected with Facebook, under it are options that you can toggle with a click and easy click of the remove button. This will allow you to control you settings on the go instead of off a computer. This is very useful for people that need to adjust their settings quickly.

You can also edit your basic information and who can see your profile. This is very important for anyone who wants to change anything at all. These features will be made possible by Facebook themselves! The features should roll out in the next few weeks to all mobile devices and we may see a new Facebook for iPhone app update soon. Tips Fix Battery Drain Issue and Activate iPhone 4 / 3GS Without Original SIM

Without the original SIM card to activate iPhone 4 and 3Gs has never been easier with the SAM (Artificial Subscriber Module). Although SAM works on iPhones 4 ultrasn0w-unlocked, remain difficult to force the iPhone and iTunes in generating ticket activation. This condition is eating out the iPhone battery life and credit even if you do not use the unlimited internet package. Here’s how to fix using the SAM.

1. Jailbreak the iPhone using the latest Redsn0w 0.9.6b6
2. Once it is done, start Cydia and add http://repo.bingner.com repository
3. Then, install SAM and SAMPrefs
4. Start the Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and select Deactivate. By doing this, it will undo the unlock and make way to SAM to operate
5. Now navigate to Settings > SAM and tap De-Activate iPhone
6. Connect your iPhone to the computer, start iTunes and allow iTunes activating your iPhone. If it is working well then an “iPhone is activated” message will pop up
Note: if it doesn’t work and saying that the SIM is invalid, you must select the carrier manually by choosing other methods than automatic, then tap on a SIMID, and you are done

How to Switch Back to Old Facebook Profile Page Layout

Facebook has introduced the new design for profile pages with prominent display of basic profile information, latest photos, friends list and more. However, some users may not like the new design and want to revert back to old Facebook profile page layout. Do you want really to switch back to old Facebook profile page layout design?

Well, technically you can't revert back to old Facebook profile layout as Facebook Help Center (http://facebook.com/help/?faq=19409) notes “You will not be able to switch back to the old design after upgrading”.

Though this, some users have reported that they have successfully switched back to the old layout by deactivating Facebook account for 10 - 15 minutes and then reactivate it again, you will get the old Facebook Profile Page back. I have just tried that way and it works for me. So, did it work with you?

iOS 4.3 to be Released on Thursday; December 9th?

As reported by GadgetAndGizmos, Apple could release the iOS 4.3 for iPhone and iPad Thursday, December 9. The date is not accidental, because on that day Sony will officially present its PSPhone.

The new iOS 4.3 should fix some small bugs in the previous firmware and above all implement new purchasing opportunities for magazines on iTunes.

To date, in fact, you can not buy tickets directly from the App Store, but this function is the intent of Apple for months. Not surprisingly, in recent weeks, have made increasingly dense meetings with various U.S. publishers, some of which, however, does not see a good degree the conditions imposed by Apple (who pocket 30% on each subscription sold).

Moreover, in recent weeks, there was talk of a possible press conference that Apple would keep its December 9 and that, at this point, we can say with certainty, there will be. But there could be the surprise of the firmware 4.3

Download GreenPois0n iOS 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak ( soon )

After the release of iOS 4.2.1 we enjoyed the jailbreak in our hands, but unfortunately it was tethered jailbreak for the most common devices, Chronic-dev-team has promised that they will upgrade Greenpois0n to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 4 / 3GS, iPad 4G / 3G / 2G and iPad but this time will be untethered jailbreak. The good news today that Greenpois0n official page has been updated few minutes ago, which indicates that there is something is being done behind doors.

iPad 2 is Coming in Less than 100 Days, With FaceTime Support, Retina Display And Gyroscope

If recent reports are to be believed, Apple’s second generation iPad will begin shipping somewhere around the end of February 2011, which is around 100 days from now. Initial shipments will range between 400,000 and 600,000 units from Foxconn, which is Apples manufacturer for the iPad 2.
iPad 2
Still unconfirmed, but the report claims that mass production of the iPad 2 was expected for January 2011, but has now been pushed back to February as Apple is still testing the iPad 2′s firmware. Apple devices are said to be undergoing more rigorous testing since the highly publicized defect of the iPhone 4 , which is now more popularly known as the Antennagate. The delay is specified to issues with the iPad 2 firmware, which could mean that Apple is eliminating final issues out of the new software whilst also depleting inventory of the current generation iPad. Speculation has indicated that the iPad 2 will include a front-facing FaceTime camera, Retina Display and a gyroscope, all very likely additions to keep in league with the current generation of Apple products.
Apple tend to announce their devices annually and at around the same time each year. June is usually the iPhone update announcement, whilst September is the time when new iPod’s surface and January could become the iPad keynote month.
A separate rumor also suggests that Qualcomm will be providing the baseband chips for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 and iPad 2. Watch this space for more information about all things Apple as it arrives. Mac App Store to Open Next Monday Along with iOS 4.3 Launch?

In case you are on of our readers, you may know that Apple is reportedly launching iOS 4.3 next Monday (December 13th). However, an inside source has just told Appletell that Apple is targeting a Monday, December 13th launch of the Mac App Store.

An inside source has just told us that Apple is targeting a Monday, December 13th launch of the Mac App Store. The company apparently told developers to have their software prepared for a launch as early as Monday the 6th of this month, but our contact would be shocked if that happened at this point. Apple has made no official announcements regarding this, and delays could always happen, but there's a push to be launched before Christmas, well ahead of the previously estimated January release.
At the Back to the Mac even on October 20th, Steve Jobs confirmed that the Mac App Store should be launched after 90 days which means late in January 2011 so we can't verify these claims but we do know that Apple has already started asking developers to submit their apps to the Mac App Store and has already seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.6 to Mac App developers. So this may claims that Apple would launch it earlier than what they said.

Friendly, The Hugely Successful Unofficial Facebook iPad App, Goes Free

As we’re all well aware, Facebook doesn’t offer an iPad app. Well, maybe we’re not all so aware of that. Because Friendly, an unofficial app made by Oecoway, has been a massive hit on the platform. In fact, it has over 500,000 active users, co-founder Cyril Moutran tells us. And that’s pretty amazing considering that they have been charging for the app. But you can probably expect that number to explode even further, as they’ve decided to make the app free.

To be clear, there will still be a $0.99 version of Friendly, but the only difference from the new free version is that it won’t have ads. Undoubtedly, most users won’t care about that and will opt for the free
version. And the app will rack up even more downloads because 1) again, Facebook doesn’t have an official app and 2) Friendly is a very solid way to use Facebook on the device.

“We’re making Friendly for Facebook free, because we want to expand our user base and put Friendly for Facebook in as many people’s hands as possible,” Moutran says. The service essentially takes the touch-optimized version of Facebook’s site and wraps it in their own native app wrapper. But this allows them to add more functionality, such as the ability to change fonts and colors. Plus you can browse the web within it and quickly share back to Facebook. You can also easily manage multiple Facebook accounts from the app.
The app also brings a native app look, feel, and performance to Facebook. That may not sound like much, but given the usage numbers, it definitely can’t be overlooked.
But while Friendly is very good, let’s be honest: if Facebook had their own app, most people would likely use that. People currently searching for “Facebook” on the iPad only have the third-party options — and this has tricked some people. And considering that many of these apps are paid apps, that has cost people money — something which Facebook can’t like too much.

So did Facebook pressure Friendly to go free? It doesn’t seem that way. Moutran says that Facebook has been very supportive of what they’ve been doing. “The Facebook Platform team in particular deserves kudos for their around the clock dedication at providing help and guidance to developers on iOS SDK,” he says.

Maybe we should take Friendly going free as a sign that an official app is coming? That also doesn’t seem all that likely given Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent words about the possibility.

While Moutran declined to talk about their revenue numbers, if you simply take the 500,000 user number and multiply it by the one dollar the app had sold for, you get $500,000 (before Apple takes their 30 percent cut). Of course, Moutran did say the 500,000 is active users, so it’s possible the app has been downloaded quite a bit more, bringing Oecoway even more money.

Now they’ll likely have to replace a lot of that money with ad revenue. Will it add up? Who knows, but this move will undoubtedly bring them a lot more users.

“We’re really excited because Friendly for Facebook has been an extremely successful paid application. It’s held the top overall spot for paid applications for more than 40 days, and it’s been the top paid social media iPad app since we launched version 1.0. But we want as many people as possible to be able to experience Friendly for Facebook so that’s why we are making it free,” Moutran reiterates.

That’s great news for Facebook users and iPad lovers alike.

You can find the free version of Friendly HERE. And the paid version HERE.

How To Unlock iPhone 3GS, 3G Ultrasn0w 1.2 on iOS 4.2.1

The iPhone Dev Team has just released ultrasn0w 1.2 which brings carrier unlock for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G on iOS 4.2.1 or iOS 4.1.

From the iPhone Dev Team Blog:

Today we’re pleased to announce our free carrier unlock for iPhone3G/3GS owners with a baseband later than 05.13.04.  The unlock for that baseband exploited the AT+XAPP command, thanks to a crash initially discovered by @sherif_hashim (@Oranav also found this crash).  So what hole are we exploiting today, since Apple closed that AT+XAPP hole?  Well, we’re exploiting the exact same hole!

It turns out that the very first iPad firmware 3.2.2 has baseband version 06.15.00 still vulnerable to AT+XAPP.  The iPad baseband is built for the exact same baseband chip as the iPhone3G/3GS — they’re fully compatible!  Some of us have been running 06.15 for weeks now on our iPhones in preparation for this release.

Since 06.15 is a higher version than 05.14 or 05.15 (where AT+XAPP is gone), anyone stuck at those versions can simply upgrade to 06.15 to unlock again!  Luckily for us, Apple *still* provides the iPad FW 3.2.2 with this vulnerable baseband right from their own servers. (Grab it now, before they take it down!)
We’ve been busy updating both PwnageTool and redsn0w to make the baseband update as seamless as possible.
  1. First up is “PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition”.  It has a special dialog box which will ask you if you want to update to the iPad baseband.  You must already have the iPad 3.2.2 IPSW on your computer (see the above link)….so just point PwnageTool at it (or let it find it on its own if you’re in “simple” mode).
  2. Directly after PwnageTool 4.1.3 is available, the official ultrasn0w repo http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com will be updated with ultrasn0w 1.2, which covers iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00.
  3. Finally, we’ll release an update to redsn0w today for those without Macs and can’t run PwnageTool.  The new redsn0w will give you the option to update your baseband to 06.15 too.
WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!  PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.
  1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple.  You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
  2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
  3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail).  You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).
Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to!  Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.

This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…for all else, it’s still only 4.1.  If you have an iPhone3GS with an old bootrom, the new redsn0w will handle 4.2.1 for you (in fact it covers 4.2.1 for all devices, even though some of them are still tethered at 4.2.1 until @comex can work some untethering magic).  iPhone3GS users with old bootroms who want to go to 4.2.1 should not use this PwnageTool!  Update to stock 4.2.1 first, then use the upcoming redsn0w to update your baseband.

Please feel free to use our comments section for questions.  We have some very knowledgeable and helpful moderators:  angiepangie, Confucious, dhlizard, and Frank55!

How to: Jailbreak iPhone 3GS / 3G on iOS 4.2.1:
STEP 1: Unlocking requires that your iPhone is jailbroken. Download PwnageTool from link given above and use it in Unlock edition to update the baseband to 06.15.00. Also note that there's a version of Redsn0w will be out tonight for Windows users to update the baseaband.

How to: Unlock iPhone 3GS / 3G on iOS 4.2.1:
STEP 2: Once you jailbreak yoour device, you can now unlock your iPhone on baseband 06.15.00 using Ultrasn0w 1.2 from Cydia. To do so, follow the steps below:

  • Press to select the Manage tab at the bottom of the screen.
  • Press to select the Sources button

  • Now touch on Edit and then on Add. You will be prompted to enter the URL of the source. Type http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and touch on Add Source to add this repository.

  • Now select repo666.ultrasn0w.com from the sources list and at last select ultrasn0w from the list of packages as shown below then install this application.

STEP 3: Almost done, now simply reboot your iPhone and you should have a fully unlocked iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1.

Unfortunately, iPhone 4 unlockers have to wait a bit longer before they can use their device on any carrier they like but at least they had promised to start working on that starting from tomorrow.

ultrasn0w 1.2 causing loss of GPS for iPhones with 6.15.00 baseband

This post will help those who unlocked iOS 4.2.1/iOS 4.1 on their using ultrasn0w 1.2 and were experiencing GPS issues. The iPhone Dev Team have acknowledged the unfortunate fact of ultrasn0w causing loss of GPS for the iPhone unlockers.

The strange thing that comes out from their acknowledgement is that this loss of GPS is not a universal problem:

Unlockers have been reporting mixed results about GPS functionality at 06.15.00. Until we can track down what differentiates those who retain GPS vs. those who lose it, be conservative and assume you’ll lose GPS at 06.15.00. As we work on finding the cause (and possibly a fix), please report your personal findings in our comments section. (Update: early indications are that while 06.15.00 is capable of GPS, it will require some further hacks. But please still be conservative and assume you will lose GPS at 06.15, in case the hacks don’t work).

To sum it all up:

* By unlocking iPhone 3G/3GS with baseband 06.15.00, assume you will lose GPS.
* Baseband 06.15.00 does support GPS functionality.
* A few hacks are required to fix the the troublesome part

How to Save SHSH Blobs Directly From iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Using iSHSHit

iSHSHit is a new Cydia app that is an alternative to Tiny Umbrella. It lets you save and backup SHSH blobs directly off your iOS device. It also has the original functionality of being able to send your saved SHSH blobs via email, which is a very handy feature. It also automatically uses the Cydia On-File service, meaning that your SHSH blobs will also be saved on the Cydia servers.
SHSH
iSHSHit is very straight forward and simple to use. After installing it from Cydia, just click on the save icon at the top right corner, and wait for it to save your SHSH blobs to Cydia. Once your SHSH blob has been saved, you will get a message as can be seen in the screenshots below.
ShSh 1 ShSh 2
ShSh 3
In case you don’t already know, saving SHSH blobs have proved to be very useful for downgrading to older firmwares. Recent tweets from Comex suggests that they will also be required for untethered jailbreaks in future.
Here is the official description:
iSHSHit allows you to back up device firmware SHSH blobs from Apple directly on your device for later downgrading. It automatically uses the Cydia On File service in the background, so it’s a great way to ensure that your SHSH is stored by Cydia. iSHSHit can also email your SHSH blobs to you for more permanent storage.
Cydia iOS 4.1 SHSH Blobs
You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install it. Follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with Redsn0w on iOS 4.2.1, or with Limera1n on iOS 4.1 if you haven’t already.
iSHSHit is available now from Cydia under the BigBoss repository for free.
